Creating Custom Data
The UK Prominent Peaks database Excel tool allows you to create own bespoke hillwalking challenge by taking a subset of the peaks listed. You may want to choose a particular type of peak or go for a particular geographic area. A bespoke challenge can be created by deleting the parts of the database that are not needed. However, the progress tracking capabilities will still work.
To take an example, say you wanted to create a “greater Cairngorms challenge” to cover the area east of the A9 from Perth to Aviemore and east of the Spey from Aviemore to the Moray Firth. This area, consisting of arctic-like plateau scenery, corresponds to the SMC guidebook "The Cairngorms" by Adam Watson. It corresponds to Sections 5B, 6, 7, 8 and 21 in the Section column.
To create a workbook for this challenge, firstly save a copy of the database. Then select the Section column and using the data menu choose the filter command.
Click on the filter symbol and firstly ensure that "select all" is chosen.
Then scroll through the check boxes, unselecting those for sections 5B, 6, 7, 8 and 21. Next, click “OK” and the rows corresponding to these sections will disappear.
Scroll down and select all rows except the first one. Excel will indicate that 1395 of 1564 records have been selected. Then use the right mouse button and choose "delete row". Return to col J and use the filter to "select all", now the records from sections 5B, 6, 7, 8 and 21 reappear and are the only records in the workbook.
Saving the workbook will create a document specifically for the “greater Cairngorm” challenge.
